Scheduling Your First Visit at Allegheny County Jail: Understanding the 48-Hour Rule

Every visit at Allegheny County Jail must be scheduled at least 48 hours ahead. You can't book today for tomorrow - plan for that two-day buffer so you don't end up without an appointment. Once you're approved, schedule your visit through the GTL visitation portal. The portal lets you pick your preferred date, time, and location - no guessing about availability. Not every pod uses online scheduling. Some require visitors to call the morning of the assigned visitation day to book a slot. If you can't find an online time when you think you should, call and ask whether the person you're visiting is in a pod that follows the "call that morning" rule.

Weather can cancel visits too. Allegheny County Jail has shut down social visits due to winter storms - for example, Sunday, January 25; Monday, January 26; and Tuesday, January 27, 2026 - while attorney visits continued. If bad weather is in the forecast, check for facility announcements before making the trip.
