Sending Books and Magazines to Clatsop County Jail: Source, Size, and Limits

Clatsop County Jail only accepts books shipped directly from a publisher, bookstore, or book club. Anything forwarded from your home won't make it through. Pick a seller that can ship straight to the jail - don't try to send something yourself.

Size Binding Condition

  • ✓ Up to 9" x 12" maximum size
  • ✓ No hardbound (hardcover) books
  • ✓ No spiral-bound books
  • ✓ No plastic binding and no metal binding
  • ✓ Books must be new (used books aren’t accepted)

The jail limits inmates to three books and three magazines at a time. Here's the catch: if they already have books, those get returned before new ones are allowed in. Sending more before their current set clears out can slow things down or result in your package being sent back.

  1. Order from an approved source - Choose a publisher, bookstore, or book club that will buy and ship the book directly.
  2. Check the format before you place the order - Keep it under 9" x 12", make sure it’s not hardbound or spiral-bound, and avoid any plastic or metal binding; the book also needs to be new.
  3. Confirm they’re under the limit - The jail allows up to three books and three magazines at a time, and previously received books will be returned before new ones can be obtained.
