Arriving for a Visit at FCI McKean: Consent to Search, Prohibited Items, and Medications

The moment you step onto FCI McKean's grounds - or even try to - you're consenting to a search. This is Bureau of Prisons policy, backed by federal regulations in 28 C.F.R. Part 511. Refuse, and staff can turn you away. Screening is simply part of the visit, so expect it from the start.

Prohibited List

  • Weapons
  • Explosives
  • Drugs
  • Intoxicants
  • Currency (large amounts)
  • Cameras of any type
  • Recording equipment
  • Telephones (any type)
  • Radios
  • Pagers
  • Other electronic devices

Tip: If you’re unsure about something - especially electronics or accessories - leave it in the car or at home and confirm with the facility before you go.

Bringing medication? It gets handled separately at the entrance. You'll need to list everything on the visitor notice form, and all medications stay at the entry area during your visit. Give yourself extra time for this step so check-in doesn't feel rushed.

Practical prep: Bring a clear list of what you’re carrying (or the prescription label information) so you can write it down quickly, and ask ahead about any special medication needs.

Refuse a search, and you won't get in - it's that simple. Bringing prohibited items can end your visit before it starts, since nothing banned is allowed on Bureau property without the warden's knowledge and consent. If you're unsure about something, leave it behind and call the facility before you travel.
