What Happens When the Visit Room Reaches Capacity at Monroe (and How to Prepare)

When the visit room fills up, staff keep a log of who enters and what time they arrive. That log is how they manage a full room and rotate people through. If staff need to open space for new visitors, they don't just start cutting visits at random. The documented practice is to ask for volunteers first before ending any visits for capacity reasons.

If the visit room is full, a visitor who has been there for half of the visit period may be asked to leave so new visitors can enter. Basically, capacity limits can turn a full-length visit into a half-period one. These procedures can also affect whether an incarcerated person can see more than one set of visitors that day. If someone has already had a visitor (or visitors), additional visits may not be allowed when the room is overcrowded.

1. Make sure you are approved to visit before you go: MCC requires visitors to complete the visitor application process and be approved before visiting. This applies to both in-person prison visits and video visits.
2. Use MCC’s Visitor’s Guidelines and visiting hours to plan your day: MCC points visitors to DOC Policy 450.300 for general visit rules, and it also publishes facility-specific Visitor’s Guidelines and regular visiting hours. Checking those details before you travel helps you avoid preventable issues that can cost you time if the room is busy.

If staff announce the visit room is at capacity and ask for volunteers to end visits early, stay calm and polite. Volunteers are always the first option before staff end any visits on their own. It's also reasonable to ask staff how they're tracking arrivals. MCC's capacity procedure includes a log of visitors entering the room and the time they arrived.
