How to Register for a Free ViaPath Account and Apply to Visit

How to Register for a Free ViaPath Account and Apply to Visit
  1. Go to the IDOC ViaPath website and start registration - You’ll need to create a ViaPath (vendor) account to apply.
  2. Create your ViaPath account (free) - Registering the account you use to apply does not cost anything.
  3. Find the electronic visitation application - Once you’re logged in, locate the electronic application used to request visiting privileges.
  4. Complete and submit the application - Fill out the required fields carefully and submit it through the ViaPath system. Your application is what starts the approval process, and you must be approved before you can schedule in-person or online visits.
  • If you are 16 or older, upload a photo ID with your application.
  • Use an accepted photo ID: valid driver’s license, valid state photo ID, valid photo military ID, valid passport, or another valid government ID (including foreign government IDs).

Proving your identity is part of the application, and missing documents can slow things down or get your request denied. Visitors 16 and older need to submit a photo ID. The Department accepts a valid driver's license, state photo ID, photo military ID, passport, or other valid government ID (including foreign government IDs). Sometimes they'll ask for additional paperwork beyond your photo ID - things like a Social Security card, birth certificate, or approval letters. If extra documents are requested, submit them electronically to the facility's visitation coordinator so your application keeps moving.

Once you submit your application, anyone 16 or older goes through criminal background and warrant checks. This is standard for determining who gets approved as a visitor. After a decision is made, the incarcerated person and/or the facility is notified, and you can schedule your visit if approved.

Reminder: You must have an approved application on file before you can schedule any in-person or online visit. The background/warrant check process is part of that approval.
