What families should know about facility rules and intake
Warning: MDOC states inmates are never legally allowed to possess or use a cell phone, and it warns family and friends not to send or bring cell phones because doing so can lead to prosecution for introduction of contraband.
Early in an MDOC sentence, intake involves more than just being assigned a bed. MDOC describes an Admission and Orientation period that includes an introduction to the classification process, MDOC orientation, an HIV/AIDS class, DNA testing, PREA training, and receiving a copy of the MDOC Inmate Handbook. Knowing this helps set expectations: phone and visitation routines often take time to settle while someone is being processed and classified.
Some policies that affect release and access are set at the MDOC level. For Earned Release Supervision (ERS), MDOC states an inmate must have an approved in-state residence, and the handbook lists multiple automatic disqualifiers (including habitual offender status and certain escape, violent, and sex-related convictions). Access can also change quickly based on facility conditions or statewide guidance. MDOC's COVID-19 updates show that visitation has been frozen and later reopened in past years. If you're handling travel paperwork while supporting a loved one, plan ahead for processing timelines and fees. DeSoto County states routine passport processing can take 4 to 6 weeks (with expedited service at 2 to 3 weeks for an additional fee), and it notes acceptable payment types and a 2.5% processing fee when using a credit or debit card for certain clerk fees.
Preguntas frecuentes
Q
