Planning a visit: applications, processing, and what to expect on-site
- Wait for the application packet from the inmate. MDOC says inmates are responsible for initiating the process by sending the Application for Visiting Privileges to the people they want to see.
- Complete every section and mail it as instructed. MDOC instructs visitors to review the application completely, fill out all parts, and mail it to the MDOC address listed in the visitor application package.
- Do not search for an online form. MDOC states visitation forms are not available online and are not emailed or mailed by MDOC.
On the day of your visit, plan for a process that looks more like airport-style screening than a casual check-in. MDOC explains that visitors generally park and leave prohibited items and personal possessions (including wallets, cell phones, and purses) locked in their vehicle, then walk to the visitation processing center to register. Visitors may be searched for contraband and/or asked to walk through a body scanner. MDOC warns it is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal possessions on prison grounds. MDOC is also direct that visitation is a privilege, not a right. Visitation privileges can be revoked for rule violations, and visits can be suspended at any time based on conditions inside and outside facilities.
Tip: MDOC says its visitation information applies to state facilities. Regional facilities (local authorities) and privately operated prisons may have different policies. Call the specific facility in advance to confirm the current schedule and rules, especially since visitation can be limited or suspended.
