Getting approved to visit someone in an NC prison: visitor application checklist
Before you can visit someone in an NC state prison, you need to get approved through the visitor application process. The checklist below will help you submit the right documents the first time.
If you want to visit someone in an NC prison, you need to submit a visitor application and get it approved. A visit cannot happen until facility staff approve a completed application, so treat the application as the first step before you try to plan a trip.
Approval means the facility has reviewed your application and cleared you to visit. Until that happens, you won't be allowed in. Build in extra time. If you're hoping to visit on a specific weekend or around a holiday, submit your application well ahead of time. Waiting for approval at the last minute can derail your plans.
ID Requirement 16 Plus
- ✓ If you are age 16 or older, attach a copy of one approved picture ID to your visitor application.
For any child under 16, you'll need to attach a copy of their birth certificate to the application. Submitting paperwork for multiple children? Make sure each application has the correct birth certificate included.
Even after your application is approved, you still need to be on the incarcerated person's approved-visitor list. Each offender can have up to 18 approved visitors total (adults and minors combined), so the list may already be full. If you're told you can't be added, ask the incarcerated person to check how many people are already approved. They may need to remove someone to make room. Getting approved and getting on the list are two separate steps that both need to happen.
