Visitation

Video visits vs. in-person visits (and how to set up GettingOut video visits)

Trying to stay connected with someone at Albemarle Corrections Facility? Under NCDAC visitation policy, you have two options: in-person visits and video visits. Which one works best depends on what the facility currently offers and what fits your schedule, budget, and travel situation.

NCDAC facilities offer both in-person and video visits. In-person visits mean face-to-face time inside the facility, but they require more planning: travel, check-in procedures, and scheduling. Video visits are remote, making them easier to fit into a busy week. The tradeoff? They depend on the facility's video setup and whether you have a reliable device and internet connection.

In-person visits are by appointment only. You'll need to call or email the prison where your loved one is housed to schedule. Then, call again the day before your visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. This extra step can save you a wasted trip if something changes.

NCDAC video visits run through the GettingOut Visits app (or the web version). You connect from your phone, tablet, or computer. On the other end, your loved one uses their electronic tablet or a video kiosk inside the facility.

Video visits aren't open to everyone automatically. You must be on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list. If you're not sure whether you're approved, confirm that first before expecting video visits to work.

GettingOut offers two ways to connect: on-demand (sometimes called "visit now") or scheduled for a specific date and time. Both options are handled through the GettingOut Visits app or website, depending on what the facility supports.

According to GettingOut Visits, you're only charged for the time you actually use. The app's listing states there are no upfront costs, connection fees, penalties, or minimum and maximum costs. Billing is based on actual visit duration.

Don't assume video visits are available just because you downloaded the app. GettingOut Visits only works at select facilities. Verify availability for Albemarle before counting on video visits as your primary option.

  1. Check whether Albemarle is supported in GettingOut: Look for a facility list in GettingOut, or search for the facility inside the app or web experience.
  2. Confirm the facility can actually host video visits right now: Because availability can vary, call the prison to confirm whether GettingOut video visits are supported at Albemarle.
  3. If you are scheduling an in-person visit, confirm the day before: Call the day before your scheduled in-person visit to confirm the facility’s visitation status.
  1. Download GettingOut Visits (or use web access): Install the GettingOut Visits app on your phone, or use the web option if you are on a computer.
  2. Create your account: Follow the prompts to register, then sign in.
  3. Find the correct facility (if available): Search for the facility in the app or web portal. If Albemarle does not appear, that can be a sign the service is only available at select facilities.
  4. Choose how you want to visit: If the facility supports it, select either an on-demand visit or schedule a visit for a future date and time.

Note: If you are video visiting from home on a computer, you will need internet access, a webcam, a microphone, and a recent web browser.

Even if the technology is working, the visit won't go through unless you're approved. Video visits are limited to people on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list. If you can't schedule or connect, check your visitor approval status first.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Confirm you are using a stable internet connection
  • Test your webcam and microphone before the visit
  • If using a computer, use a recent web browser
  • Know whether you are starting an on-demand visit or joining a scheduled visit
  • Double-check your billing setup and available balance (GettingOut says you are charged only for the actual duration of the visit)

Not sure whether Albemarle supports GettingOut video visits? Call the facility directly. And if you have an in-person visit scheduled, call the day before to confirm the facility's visitation status.
