How to Visit Facility

Visitation at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center is provided through secure video access using SmartInmate. That means your visits happen on a screen rather than in a traditional in-person visiting room.

No device or internet at home? You can still visit. Head to the Public Safety Center and use a free terminal in the Detention Center lobby for your scheduled video visit.

Remote video visits work from any location with internet access. If you're visiting from home or another off-site spot, find somewhere quiet with a stable connection so you can stay online for the full visit.

Note: All video visits with family and friends are monitored and recorded. Keep this in mind when deciding what to discuss.

  1. Register and get approved: Family and friends must register and be approved by ASO staff before you can schedule a video visit.
  2. Schedule your visit within the allowed window: Visits must be scheduled the day before the visit, and no more than seven days in advance.
  • Plan around the allowance: inmates receive two free 20-minute video visits per week.
  • Use the available hours: video visitation is offered seven days a week (including holidays), between 7 a.m. and midnight Eastern Time.

Since visits run through SmartInmate, you have options: connect remotely from anywhere with internet, or come to the Detention Center lobby and use the free terminal. Visiting remotely? Focus on the basics for a smooth video call: a reliable internet connection and a quiet spot where you can hear and be heard.
