Not just anyone can deposit money into an inmate's trust account. TDCJ only allows deposits from people on the inmate's approved visitor list or their Inmate Telephone List.

Note: This restriction has been in place since September 1, 2020. If you're not on the approved visitor list or Inmate Telephone List, your deposit will be rejected.

For mailed deposits, TDCJ accepts money orders and cashier's checks. Electronic deposits through authorized providers are also an option. The key is using an approved method - otherwise the funds won't be credited to the inmate's trust account.

Never send cash or personal checks - TDCJ doesn't accept either for trust fund deposits, and they'll be returned. Another common mistake: mailing deposits to the wrong address. Trust fund deposits shouldn't go to the inmate's unit (including the Alfred D. Hughes Unit), and personal mail shouldn't go to the Inmate Trust Fund address. Mix these up and you'll face delays or returned mail.

Common mistake: Mailing a deposit directly to the unit. Trust fund deposits aren't processed there and will be returned.

When sending a money order or cashier's check, include a deposit slip. The inmate can get one for you. Without it, the payment may not be credited correctly.

  • Get the deposit slip from the inmate before you buy or mail a payment
  • Include the inmate’s identifying information exactly as the deposit slip requires
  • Use only a money order or cashier’s check when mailing a deposit

Need to check if a deposit arrived? Inmate Trust Fund staff can confirm receipt. However, they won't share account balances or transaction details with anyone except the inmate.
