What to Do If the Scheduler Shows 'Call Unit' or 'Not Approved for Visits' for an Alfred D. Hughes Unit Inmate

If the Schedule Visit button is blank or replaced with “Call Unit,” the scheduler is telling you that you can’t book that visit online for that inmate right now. For Alfred D. Hughes Unit visits, the next step is straightforward: call the inmate’s unit of assignment and arrange the visit directly with unit staff.

“Not Approved for Visits” has a specific meaning in the scheduler. It can show up even after your visitor/inmate relationship has been confirmed - if the inmate’s visitation privileges have been removed. When that happens, the scheduler replaces the Schedule Visit button with “Not Approved for Visits,” because there’s nothing to schedule online until the unit’s visitation status allows it again.

Before you can schedule a visit in the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, your relationship to the inmate has to be verified. When you submit a Relationship Request, it doesn’t stay “in the system” automatically - it gets sent to the inmate’s unit of assignment. TDCJ staff at the unit are the ones who verify the visitor/inmate relationship, and that verification step is what allows your profile to move forward toward scheduling.

Note: While your Relationship Request is still waiting on approval, you’ll see it listed on your home page under “Relation Requests Pending Approval.”

  • Check your scheduler home page for “Relation Requests Pending Approval” so you know whether you’re still waiting on TDCJ staff to approve the relationship.
  • If the scheduler shows “Call Unit,” call the Alfred D. Hughes Unit (the inmate’s unit of assignment) to set up the visit and ask unit staff whether the inmate’s visitation privileges currently allow visits.

The online scheduler can’t override unit decisions about visitation status. If you’re seeing “Not Approved for Visits,” that message reflects that the visitor/inmate relationship may be confirmed, but the inmate’s visitation privileges have been removed - so the fix isn’t a button you can click online. Your best move is to verify the current visitation status with unit staff.
