Understanding Allegheny County Jail's Housing Unit Visitation Days

Allegheny County Jail runs visitation on a housing-unit schedule. You can't just show up any day - each pod has assigned visitation days, and you'll need to plan around your loved one's unit.

Here's how it breaks down. Monday visitation covers pods 1C, 5B, 6D, 6E, and 8E. Tuesday includes Level 2: Pod 5MD runs from 8:00 am–2:00 pm with half-hour visits starting on the hour, while Pod 6F runs from 3:30 pm–6:30 pm with visits starting on the half hour. Friday is assigned to pods 5MC, 5F, and 5E. Saturday belongs to Pod 6F.

Visits run Monday through Saturday - no Sunday visits. Each session lasts one hour, so plan for a weekday or Saturday slot based on your loved one's pod schedule.

Daily time windows are 8:00 am–11:00 am, 1:30 pm–3:30 pm, and 5:00 pm–6:00 pm. The afternoon window starts on the half hour, so keep that in mind when planning your arrival.

Tip: Arrive early, especially for the 1:30 pm–3:30 pm window. Visits are one hour long, and showing up late means losing part of your time.

COVID isolation pods have different rules. Pods 1C and 4A house individuals in COVID-19 isolation, and visits for these pods are handled case by case. Being on the pod's assigned day doesn't guarantee you can visit.

  1. Call the morning of the assigned visitation day - For pods affected by COVID isolation (such as 1C and 4A), you must call that morning to schedule the visit instead of scheduling online.
  2. Confirm your loved one’s clearance status - If the incarcerated person has completed isolation or has been cleared for work detail and assigned to the pod, a visit may be allowed, but it’s confirmed case by case when you call.

Call before you make the trip. The jail recommends calling 412-350-2035 or 412-350-2036 to confirm your visit hasn't been canceled. If you're visiting someone in a COVID isolation pod, don't wait - call the morning of the assigned day to schedule.

  • Call 412-350-2035 before you leave to confirm your visit hasn’t been canceled.
  • If you can’t get through, call 412-350-2036.
  • If your loved one is in a pod affected by COVID isolation (such as 1C or 4A), call the morning of the assigned visitation day to schedule the visit rather than scheduling online.

Some pods have extra requirements. According to the jail, individuals in pods 5B, 5D, 5MC, and 5MD must visit on Level 1 and need pre-approval.

Heads-up: The jail's materials aren't always consistent about which pods require Level 1 or pre-approval. Call 412-350-2035 or 412-350-2036 before your trip to confirm the current rules.
