What to Know Before Your First Visit: Check-In, Timing, and What You Can't Wear
Your first visit goes smoothly when you plan ahead, bring the right ID, and wear clothes that meet the dress code. Here's what to know before heading to Allegheny County Jail.
You need to be checked in at the visitation lobby at least 15 minutes before your scheduled visit. That's the minimum, not a cushion. Traffic, parking, and the lobby line can all eat into your time. Aim to arrive earlier so you're not rushing to make the cutoff.
Plan ahead: Social visits must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Handle scheduling first, then make sure you still arrive early enough on visit day.
Every adult visitor must show ID to the visitation officers in the lobby before being approved - this includes professional visitors. Bring your ID and have it ready when you check in.

- Get to the visitation lobby early - you must be checked in at least 15 minutes before your scheduled visit time.
- Show your identification - all incoming adult visitors (including professional visitors) are required to present ID to visitation officers before the visit can be approved.
- Complete check-in and wait for approval - once you’ve checked in and your ID has been reviewed, follow staff instructions and wait until your visit is approved.
Heads up: If you haven’t scheduled your social visit at least 48 hours in advance, you may not be able to visit that day.
Lime green, neon green, neon yellow, and orange are banned for both staff and visitors. Stick to neutral, everyday colors to avoid getting turned away at check-in.
Masks are optional inside the facility. That said, visit only if you're feeling well. If you're sick, consider rescheduling - you don't want to make the trip just to lose your visit.
