Sending Mail to Anderson County Jail: What Changed in September 2024

In late September 2024, Anderson County changed how inmate mail is handled. Most personal mail now goes through a central processing site, where it gets scanned and delivered electronically. The rules are strict: small formatting mistakes can get your mail returned, or not returned at all.

Anderson County switched to a central Inmate Messaging system for sending documents, photos, and mail to inmates. The goal? Keep contraband out of the jail while speeding up delivery.

For non-legal and non-medical mail, send everything to the central processing address: Anderson County Jail, PO Box 591, Longview, TX 75606. On the envelope and in your letter, include the inmate's name, their Sheriff's Office/booking/identifying number, and your return address. Double-check where you're sending things. Any mail sent to PO Box 591 for processing will not be returned or released.

Once your mail arrives at the central processing location, it gets scanned and sent to the inmate electronically. Your loved one views it on kiosks inside the facility, including kiosks in their cell.

Formatting Rules

  • Use standard letter-size paper only: 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall.
  • Keep it to 5 pages or less. Anything over 5 pages will not be scanned and will be returned to the sender.
  • Write on one side only. Mail is scanned front-side only, and anything with writing on the back of pages will be returned to the sender.

You can only include one photo per mailing. Send more than one, and the entire letter (plus everything inside it) gets returned. Nothing will be scanned or delivered to the inmate.

Don't send magazines, newspapers, bulk mail, or books to PO Box 591. Those items aren't accepted and will be returned to the sender. Legal and medical mail can't go through the PO Box system either. That mail must be sent directly to the facility where the inmate is housed, following the Anderson County Sheriff's Office mail guidelines.

Under the new process, mail is scanned at the central processing location and delivered electronically. Inmates read it on kiosks inside the facility.

Through the Inmate Messaging system, messages cost $0.25 each. Picture messages and document messages run $0.35 each.
