Becoming an Approved Visitor at Appling ITF — Including Significant-Relationship Visitors
Getting approved to visit at Appling ITF starts with the right paperwork — and some relationships require an extra review step. Here's how to get on the approved list and what to know about
Immediate family visitors are the people most facilities expect to see on a visitation list first. At Appling ITF, that generally means parents, siblings (brothers and sisters), a spouse, grandparents, grandchildren, and children. Your loved one (the offender) is the person who requests these immediate family members for visitation approval.
Not everyone who matters to someone in custody fits the “immediate family” category. Appling ITF can consider other people as significant-relationship visitors - this can include step-parents, step-siblings, in-laws, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, employers, and pastors. The idea is that these are relationships that can provide real rehabilitative support, even if they aren’t immediate family.
- Have your loved one start the request - Significant-relationship visits have to be initiated by the offender.
- Complete the Significant Relationship Visitor Application for Visitation Privilege - Your loved one fills out this specific application as part of the request.
- Wait for the facility review - The completed application is sent to the Warden/Superintendent for review.
- Get the decision through your loved one - Once the request is approved or denied, the offender is notified, and they’re responsible for letting you know the outcome.
Note: The facility may require supporting documentation to verify the relationship as part of the visitor approval process.
Before you can schedule a visit, you need to be approved as a visitor. The first step is filling out the Visitation Request Form and submitting the completed form to the facility where your loved one is incarcerated. If you skip this step, you may not be able to move forward with scheduling.
When you use the online scheduling system, expect to enter basic identifying details about yourself and your loved one. The form collects the offender’s GDC ID, your name, date of birth, relationship, and contact information (including email and telephone number). You’ll also see an ID Type field; the system only allows you to select Driver’s License or State ID if you are 18 years or older.
Once you’re approved, you can request a scheduled visit by submitting a request through the department’s visitation scheduling form. This is the step that actually puts you in line for a specific visit time - approval alone doesn’t automatically create an appointment.
- Open the “Add Visitor” option - Use the Add Visitor link when you already have a scheduled visitation.
- Find your scheduled visit - Locate the appointment you previously set.
- Add the additional visitor(s) - Add the extra person to that existing scheduled visit, rather than creating a brand-new request.
Deadline: For weekend visits, the cutoff to request visitation is 5:00 PM on Wednesday of the same week. For state holidays, the cutoff is 5:00 PM three days before the holiday.
