Before Your First Visit to B.B. Rayburn: What to Bring, What to Leave, and What to Expect at Screening
Your first visit to B.B. Rayburn goes smoother when you show up with less. Here's what to leave locked in your car, what's prohibited in the visiting area, what infant items you can bring, and what screening looks like.
Visitation at B.B. Rayburn is a privilege under Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections rules (Department Regulation OP-C-9). The facility can restrict, deny, or suspend visits if anyone breaks the rules. When in doubt, keep it simple - leave extra items behind. Bringing less is the easiest way to avoid problems at the door.
Before heading to the visiting area, do a quick car check. Lock up anything prohibited - drugs, alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco products should all stay in your vehicle. Same goes for electronics: phones, cameras, audio/video equipment, and other recording devices. If you don't need it for the visit, don't bring it to screening.
Prohibited List
- ✓ Controlled substances
- ✓ Alcoholic beverages
- ✓ Marijuana
- ✓ Tobacco and tobacco-related items
- ✓ Cameras
- ✓ Video recording equipment

Pack infant items with screening in mind. At B.B. Rayburn, all permitted baby items (except the baby blanket) must go in a single clear plastic container - a gallon-size zip-lock bag works well. One clear bag speeds up the search and keeps you from getting turned away over packaging.
Expect security screening at the entrance. All visitors - including minors - can be searched, along with their belongings and vehicle. This is standard procedure. Arrive ready to cooperate and carry as little as possible.
- Be ready for standard searches - Your property, vehicle, and person may be searched before you enter.
- Go through additional screening - Visitors can be screened with metal detectors and ion scanning equipment.
- Expect K-9s as part of the process - Specially trained search dogs may be used before you enter the visiting area and even in the visiting room during visits.
- Don’t refuse a search - If you refuse to be searched, you won’t be allowed to enter, and a visit can be ended if you refuse at any point.
Need medication during your visit? Plan ahead. Only life-saving or life-sustaining prescribed medication is allowed - nitroglycerine pills, inhalers, or oxygen, for example. Bring just enough for the visit, and let staff at the visiting desk know you have it when you check in.
- ✓ Bring only prescribed medication that is life-saving or life-sustaining (such as nitroglycerine pills, inhalers, or oxygen)
- ✓ Limit the quantity to no more than what you need for the duration of the visit
- ✓ Advise the staff at the visiting desk at check-in that you have the medication
