Visiting Checklist for B.B. Rayburn: What to Bring, What to Leave at Home, and Search Expectations

Visiting someone in DPS&C custody is treated as a privilege, not a right, and visits can be restricted, denied, or suspended if rules aren’t followed. If you’re not sure whether you’re on the person’s approved visiting list, check with the person you plan to visit before you make the trip.

Prohibited Items

  • Controlled substances
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Marijuana
  • Tobacco and tobacco-related items
  • Cameras
  • Video and audio recording equipment
  • Electronic devices, including (but not limited to) cellular phones, pagers, BlackBerries, radios, and tape recorders

Carrying medication? There's a strict rule: only life-saving or life-sustaining prescriptions are allowed - think nitroglycerine pills, inhalers, or oxygen. Bring just enough for the visit, no more. Tell staff at the visiting desk right away that you have medication with you. Don't wait for it to come up during screening. Being upfront speeds things along and avoids confusion.

Infant Items

  • Four diapers
  • Two jars of vacuum-sealed baby food
  • Two plastic bottles of milk or juice
  • One change of clothing
  • One baby blanket (maximum width and length not to exceed 48 inches)
  • One clear plastic bag of baby wipes

Expect to be searched when you visit. All visitors - including minors - can be searched, and that can include searches of your property, your automobile, and your person.

Screening can involve metal detectors, ion scanning, and K-9 searches. The easiest way to keep things simple? Arrive with as little as possible and nothing on the prohibited list.

Note: If you refuse to be searched, you can be denied entry or your visit can be terminated.
