Visiting B.B. Rayburn with Children: Key Rules Parents and Guardians Need to Know
Bringing a child to B.B. Rayburn? Plan on hands-on supervision the entire time. Louisiana DOC rules require anyone under 18 to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian at all times on facility property. Children can't be left alone anywhere on the grounds - not in the parking lot, not outside the entrance, not while you run back to the car. If you need to step away, bring your child with you or have the parent/legal guardian stay with them.
Infant Items
- ✓ Up to four diapers
- ✓ Up to two jars of vacuum-sealed baby food
- ✓ Up to two plastic bottles of milk or juice
- ✓ One change of clothing
- ✓ One baby blanket (maximum width and length not to exceed 48 inches)
- ✓ One clear plastic bag of baby wipes
Pack infant items so staff can inspect them easily. Everything except the baby blanket must fit inside a single clear plastic container - a gallon-size zip-lock bag works well.
Everyone goes through security screening - kids included. At B.B. Rayburn, all visitors and minors can be searched, along with their property and vehicle. Expect metal detectors and ion scanning equipment. K-9 inspections may also be used before you enter the visiting area or even during the visit itself.
Reminder: Refuse a search and you won't get in. A visit can also be ended mid-way if a visitor refuses to be searched or if contraband is found.
- Pack infant supplies the DOC-approved way - Bring only the allowed infant items, and put everything except the baby blanket into one clear plastic container (like a gallon zip-lock bag).
- Plan for constant supervision - Anyone under 18 must stay with their parent or legal guardian the entire time, and children can’t be left alone anywhere on facility grounds.
- Confirm the visit is approved before you go - Make sure the incarcerated person has you approved for visiting so you don’t make the trip and get turned away.
Heads-up: Be ready for searches - your person, property, and vehicle. Metal detectors, ion scans, and K-9 screening are all possible. Refusing a search can stop your visit before it starts or end it mid-way.
