What Happens During the Search Process at B.B. Rayburn (Metal Detectors, K-9s, and Refusals)

Screening feels a lot like airport security. You'll walk through metal detectors, and staff may use ion scanning equipment to check for traces of contraband. These searches happen before you enter the visiting area - and sometimes during the overall visiting process.

K-9s are part of the process too. Trained search dogs may screen visitors before entry and patrol the visiting room during visits. Don't be surprised if you see a dog team near the entrance or moving through the room while visits are underway.

Why screening is strict: Louisiana's visitation rules balance family connection with institutional safety. Searches and restrictions are how visits get to happen at all.

Keep this in mind: Visitation preserves outside relationships, but safety comes first. Rules around prohibited items are enforced closely.

You'll register with staff before entering the visiting area. After that, refusing a search means you won't be allowed in. If you're uncomfortable with the search process - whether by hand or other methods - don't attempt entry. Being turned away at the door ends the visit before it starts.

Even mid-visit, staff can terminate your visit if you refuse a search or if contraband turns up on you or in your belongings. This includes things people forget about - a phone in a pocket, tobacco products, a camera. Double-check what you're carrying before heading in.

Prepare Speed Screening

  • Register with staff before entering the visiting area
  • If you’re 18 or older, bring an accepted photo ID for each visit (valid state driver’s license, valid state photo ID, active-duty military photo ID, or a valid passport)
  • Leave electronic devices behind, including cell phones and pagers
  • Don’t bring cameras or audio/video recording equipment
  • Don’t bring controlled substances, alcohol, or tobacco products

When in doubt: Ask before you go. A quick check can prevent a denied or terminated visit.
