How the 10-Name Visitor List Works (And When You Can Change It)
Wondering who can visit and when you can swap names? The rules are actually pretty simple once you understand the limits and change schedule.
Each inmate can have up to 10 names on their Visitors List - no exceptions. If the list is full, someone has to come off before anyone new can be added.
Institutional inmates can only change their Visitors List once every six months. That includes adding or removing names. Plan carefully before using your change, especially if several people want on the list.
State jail, intermediate sanction facility (ISF), and substance abuse felony punishment (SAFP) inmates can change their list once every 60 days. This shorter window makes it easier to rotate family members on and off when needed.
Even with several approved visitors, eligible inmates are typically limited to one visit per visiting cycle. Think of the Visitors List as a shared plan - being on it doesn't mean everyone can show up whenever they want.
- ✓ Pick the 10 names intentionally so the people most likely to visit are included
- ✓ Coordinate with the inmate and with the other listed visitors before anyone travels
- ✓ Avoid sending multiple groups on the same cycle - later visitors can be declined when they arrive
- ✓ If you need to rotate people, plan those swaps around the allowed change schedule so you don’t get stuck with the wrong names on the list
If someone gets removed from an inmate's Visitors List, they can appeal in writing to the Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342. The appeal must be submitted within 14 days of the date on the written removal notice from the unit.
