Sending Mail to Someone at Baten Unit: The Digital Mail System Explained

TDCJ switched to a digital mail platform on September 6, 2023. Now, incoming personal mail goes to a central Digital Mail Processing Center instead of the prison itself. Staff sort and scan each piece, then upload it so inmates can read it on their secure tablets. The goal? Reduce contraband while still letting people receive letters and photos from home.

Once your letter is scanned at the Digital Mail Processing Center, it gets delivered electronically to inmates with tablets. No tablet? They'll still get their mail - just as black-and-white printed copies. The process is the same either way: personal mail goes through TDCJ's digital workflow before reaching the person you're writing.

  1. Double-check the TDCJ number and name - Use the person’s full first and last name and their TDCJ number on the envelope so it can be matched to the right inmate.
  2. Send personal letters to the Digital Processing Center - Personal mail is routed for scanning when you address it to the TDCJ Digital Processing Center at PO Box 660400 in Dallas.
  3. Handle books and magazines the approved way - Newspapers, magazines, and books can only be mailed directly when they come from the publisher, a publication supplier, a bookstore, or an online bookseller, and they still go through review under the correspondence rules.

Note: Don't mail books, magazines, or newspapers yourself. These must come directly from the publisher or an approved seller - and they can still be reviewed and rejected under TDCJ correspondence rules.
