What You Can (and Can't) Bring on a Baten Unit Visit: A Practical Checklist

Inside the secure perimeter, keep it simple. You’re allowed to carry a small wallet, a clear plastic bag (Ziploc® type), or a change purse. This is basically for the essentials you’re permitted to have with you during the visit - think small, easy to inspect, and nothing bulky.

  • Up to three diapers (if you’re bringing an infant or small child)
  • A supply of baby wipes
  • Two baby bottles (or a “sippy” cup for toddlers)
  • Store these child items together in a clear plastic bag

Many everyday items can't go past the secure perimeter - even ones that seem harmless. Leave all food in your vehicle. No purses, diaper bags, or briefcases; only a small wallet, change purse, or clear plastic bag is allowed. Electronics are off-limits: cell phones, pagers, laptop computers, cameras, digital recorders, and any other electronic or wireless device. Tobacco products, lighters, and matches stay outside too. Photographs, photo albums, baby strollers, toys, and dolls? Not allowed. Paper money is prohibited, along with knives, drugs, and medication (prescribed medication exceptions are handled case-by-case). If it's not specifically authorized, assume it won't make it inside.

Common trip-ups: Purses, diaper bags, cameras, and baby strollers aren't allowed inside the secure perimeter. Plan ahead so you're not stuck walking back to your car - or losing visit time.

Cash and phones cause the most delays. Paper money isn't allowed past the secure perimeter. If you want to use the vending machines, bring coins only - up to $35. Cell phones are banned entirely. Get caught with either during screening, and you'll have to leave the line to secure them elsewhere. Worst case, you're denied entry.

Quick tip: Bring only coins (up to $35) in your small wallet/change purse or a clear plastic bag, and leave your cell phone behind before you approach the secure perimeter.

Adults 18 and older must show a current, government-issued photo ID at check-in. Staff verify your identity before you can enter. An expired or unofficial document won't cut it.

There's one extra requirement: at least one of your ID documents must show a current physical address. The exception is for victims of family violence who have address protection certification from the attorney general. If your ID looks questionable, expect staff to ask for additional verification.

Don’t lose the visit at the front desk: Every adult (18+) needs a current government-issued photo ID, and at least one ID used must show a current physical address.
