Bautista tablets and video calls: what changed when CDCR moved to Securus

CDCR awarded its new telecommunications contract to Securus Technologies, LLC on February 21, 2025. The switch came after a competitive bidding process and a court ruling that vacated the prior ViaPath contract. That's why tablets and communication services look different now across the system.

For Bautista Conservation Camp #36, the bottom line: the transition is done. CDCR confirms all Fire Camps have fully moved to the new provider, so Bautista now runs on Securus - not ViaPath.

If you're watching costs, video call rates are the clearest change. Under ViaPath, video ran $0.16 per minute. With Securus, it's $0.10 per minute. That adds up fast if you're paying for regular calls beyond any free allowance.

Note: CDCR's guidance on free video minutes isn't perfectly consistent. One page says tablet users get 15 free minutes every two weeks; the cost comparison chart lists 30 minutes per month under Securus. Before counting on a specific amount, have your loved one check what their Bautista account actually shows.

This wasn't just a behind-the-scenes contract swap - people inside had to exchange devices. During the transition, incarcerated individuals turned in their ViaPath tablets and received new Securus ones. Content doesn't transfer: photos, e-messages, and media purchased through ViaPath can't move to the new tablets.

Since CDCR lists all Fire Camps as fully transitioned, Bautista families should expect everything to run through Securus now. Still hearing "ViaPath" from your loved one? Double-check which device they have and what platform their account is tied to.

  1. Create your Securus account - set up an account online or in the Securus mobile app so you’re ready when video calling and e-messaging are available to you.
  2. Open AdvanceConnect and add funds - in the app, choose AdvanceConnect to set up prepaid funding for video calls.
  3. Register for Video Connect - in the app, select Video Connect and register by choosing “Permit video calls.”
  4. Plan how you’ll join sessions - Securus Video Connect is designed to let you schedule and join video sessions using the free Securus app, or from a computer or tablet with internet access.

Tip: You can schedule and join Securus Video Connect sessions through the free app or on a computer. For prepaid calling, set up AdvanceConnect in the app and keep funds loaded - that way you're ready when a call opportunity opens up.

  • Confirm your loved one is using the Securus setup at Bautista (Fire Camps are listed as fully transitioned).
  • Verify the free video-minute allowance that applies to your loved one’s tablet/account (CDCR materials list two different figures).
  • If you had unused ViaPath balances tied to communication services, ask about refunds and balances through the appropriate channel before you assume the money carried over.
