What You Can (and Can’t) Bring to a Visit at BWCI: A Practical Checklist

BWCI is strict about what you can carry inside during a visit. Use this quick checklist so you don't get turned away at the door.

Bring a photo ID. BWCI requires picture identification for all visitors, and staff will check it before you’re allowed into the visiting area. If you’re visiting with someone under 16, they still need a picture ID, but it can be any picture ID.

Keep what you carry to a bare minimum. BWCI only allows your car keys and your identification inside the facility. Everything else needs to stay locked in your vehicle or left in the lobby. Leave the phone, purse, and other personal items behind so you're not scrambling at check-in.

Want to add money to your loved one's account? Bring funds with you and use the kiosk in the lobby to make a deposit. You won't hand anything directly to the incarcerated person during the visit.

BWCI also lets visitors purchase a debit card in the lobby for use with vending machines. You can grab approved snacks and drinks to share during the visit. Plan to use that debit card process rather than bringing any items in yourself.

Child-items

  • One diaper
  • Two diaper wipes
  • One bottle
  • Secure all other child items in your vehicle

Don't bring anything you plan to hand to your loved one. BWCI does not allow property exchanges between visitors and incarcerated people during a visit. Cards, letters, or other items need to go through the mail.

Heads up: Money orders are not accepted at the time of a visit at BWCI (effective August 5, 2013).
