Before You Go: ID and Dress Code for In-Person and Video Visits at Michigan Prisons
A little prep can save you a wasted trip. Here's what you need to know about acceptable ID and dress code for both in-person and video visits at Michigan prisons.
When you arrive at a Michigan prison, you'll sign in and show your ID at check-in. Adults need a government-issued photo ID - a driver's license, state ID card, military ID, or passport all work. Staff verify your identity before every visit.
Tip: Bring your government-issued photo ID every time. If you registered for visits with a specific ID, use that same one at check-in.
Have a temporary ID or temporary driver's license without a photo? Don't rely on it alone. Michigan requires you to bring additional photo identification so staff can verify who you are.
Amish visitors: If you don't have photo ID for religious reasons, you can use two non-photographic IDs instead. Bring both and have them ready at check-in.
Inperson Dress Code Key Rules
- ✓ Revealing clothing, including skirts or shorts more than 3 inches above the knee
- ✓ Form-fitting outerwear like leggings or yoga pants
- ✓ Hooded items
- ✓ Clothing with graphic content
Dress code is enforced at the door, and showing up in something too revealing or tight is the fastest way to get turned away. Skirts and shorts can't be more than 3 inches above the knee. Skip leggings or yoga pants as outerwear. Hooded clothing and items with graphic content can also cause problems - when in doubt, go with plain, simple layers.
Video visits have their own dress code, and it's stricter than many people expect. You must be fully dressed on camera - no underwear, swimwear, or lingerie as outer clothing. You can't remove clothing during the visit. Undergarments are required, including bras for all female visitors with breast tissue.
Breastfeeding: You can breastfeed during a video visit, as long as the child is on the prisoner's approved visitor list.
- Log in 10 minutes early - Registered video visitors must log into the ViaPath Visitor website 10 minutes before the scheduled visit for verification and approval.
