Can Your Loved One Get a Tablet? How ViaPath Tablets and JPay Payments Work in PA Prisons
Trying to help your loved one get a tablet in a Pennsylvania state prison? Here's the key thing to know: they have to buy it themselves through commissary. Your role is usually funding their account.
Pennsylvania state prisons allow inmates to purchase and use ViaPath tablets. The tablet has to be bought by the inmate through the Department of Corrections commissary system, using funds they have in custody. So your job on the outside is straightforward: make sure they have enough money in their account when they're ready to place the order.
Note: You cannot directly order a tablet for an inmate. The order has to be placed by the inmate through the DOC commissary system.
If your loved one wants a tablet but doesn't have enough funds, family and friends can send money so the inmate can purchase it. Pennsylvania DOC materials state that a JPay account is required to send those funds through JPay. Plan to set up your own account first, then deposit money for your loved one to use.
- ✓ Put a valid email address or a valid mailing address on the deposit form. JPay will not process a money order without one or the other.
- ✓ Fill out the Money Order Deposit Slip completely and legibly. Missing fields or hard-to-read writing can delay processing.
For mailed money orders, JPay says approved money orders will be processed within ten business days after they receive them. Mail time is separate, so build in extra days for delivery before that processing window even starts.
