What Professionals Must Know Before Visiting Bergen County Jail (IDs, lockers, and prohibited items)
Visiting Bergen County Jail as an attorney, clergy member, interpreter, or medical professional? Success comes down to three things: showing up during professional access hours, having the right ID, and leaving prohibited items in the lockers.
Professional visits are permitted daily from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 P.M. Plan your legal, medical, religious, or other professional meetings within this window.
Approval required: All professional visits are subject to approval by the Tour Commander on duty.
IDs to Bring
- ✓ Be ready to give your name to the Reception Officer on duty.
- ✓ Bring proper identification to present at reception (examples include a Bergen County Sheriff-issued identification card, an Attorney Bar Association card, a Motor Vehicle License, or a Medical License).
Locker Deposit Requirements
- ✓ Cell phones
- ✓ Coats
- ✓ Keys
- ✓ Tobacco products
- ✓ Any other prohibited items
Warning: If you don’t deposit prohibited items in the lockers, you may face fines and criminal prosecution.
Inside the jail during a professional visit, keep what you carry to a minimum. Bergen County Jail permits only soft-sided file folders within the facility while you’re visiting an inmate.
Just as important: what you hand over. The inmate may not be given anything other than legal papers during a professional visit, so don’t plan to pass along personal items, supplies, or extras - even if they seem harmless.
- ✓ Money
- ✓ Pens
- ✓ Highlighters
- ✓ Paper clips
- ✓ Jewelry
- ✓ Matches
- ✓ Lighters
- ✓ Cigarettes
- ✓ Chewing gum
Build in extra time when you arrive. Entry isn't automatic - even during professional access hours, the Tour Commander on duty must approve your visit.
Reminder: Bringing prohibited items past the lockers can lead to fines and criminal prosecution.
