What You Can't Bring to a Berks County Jail Visit (And Why Your Phone Must Stay in the Car)

Some items are an automatic no at Berks County Jail - even if they seem harmless. Weapons of any kind are prohibited, including anything that could be treated as one. Medications and drugs aren't allowed in with you either. Alcohol is also banned, and that includes products containing alcohol. Cough syrup trips people up more often than you'd think. These aren't flexible guidelines. They're core safety policies protecting everyone in the building.

Reminder: If you arrive with prohibited items, staff can stop you from entering and you may lose your visit. For anything that looks like a serious security issue (like a weapon or drugs), expect the situation to be treated accordingly.

Your phone has to stay out of the building. Berks County Jail doesn't allow cell phones inside, and you can't use one during your visit. Don't wait until you're at the front desk to figure this out - leave your phone at home or locked in your car before you walk in.

Tip: Turn your phone off and lock it in the car. This rule is enforced.

Leave the snacks and drinks at home. Berks County Jail doesn't allow outside food or beverages in visitation. If you need something while you're there, vending machines are available in the visitation corridor.

What you wear matters. Staff can turn you away at the lobby for inappropriate attire. One rule to know: skirts must reach the knees - miniskirts aren't allowed. The same conservative standard applies to other revealing clothing. Tank tops, low-cut shirts, spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops, midriff shirts, and sheer or see-through items are all prohibited.

When in doubt: Dress more conservatively than you think necessary. A knee-length skirt and a regular shirt with solid coverage are safer bets than testing the dress code at the door.
