GTL/ViaPath Friends & Family Accounts: What the 180-Day Inactivity Rule Means for Families (NC)

GTL/ViaPath Friends & Family accounts become inactive after 180 consecutive days without use - and inactive accounts are subject to forfeiture. (Some states or contracts may require a different timeframe, but 180 days is the standard.) The bottom line: don't let your account sit untouched for months, or you risk losing access to your funds. Any activity during that 180-day window resets the clock.

  1. Call customer service - Contact ViaPath/GTL customer service at 866-516-0115.
  2. Verify your account - Let them know you’re calling about your Friends & Family account and confirm the account details they ask for.
  3. Request the refund - Ask for a refund for the inactive Friends & Family account and follow the instructions they give you.

ViaPath offers reminder notices, but you have to opt in - they're not automatic. Once you provide your contact information and enable alerts, ViaPath will send a text and/or email at least 30 days before your account expires. Want the warning in time to act? Make sure your contact info is current and the reminder setting is turned on.

  • Opt in to ViaPath reminder alerts so you can get a text and/or email notice no later than 30 days before the scheduled expiration.
  • Provide (and keep) your contact information up to date so the reminder can reach you.
  • Use the account occasionally; any use during the inactivity period resets the 180-day countdown.
  • If your account becomes inactive and you need your balance back, call ViaPath/GTL customer service at 866-516-0115 to request a refund.
