Visiting Someone at Bertie Correctional Institution: Appointment & Entry Checklist

Visits at Bertie are tied to an approved visitor list with a hard cap: only 18 visitor applications are allowed per offender. If multiple family members want to visit, coordinate early to make sure everyone who needs approval can apply.

Being on the list isn't enough - you can't visit until facility staff have reviewed and approved your application. Handle this step first. Show up before approval is in place, and you'll be turned away at the door.

  1. Call the prison to schedule your visit - In-person visits are by appointment only, so you’ll need to call the prison where the person is housed to set up an appointment.
  2. Use the same process for future visits - Each in-person visit is scheduled by calling the facility, not by just arriving during a set “open” time.

Tip: Call the day before your scheduled visit to confirm the facility’s visitation status, so you don’t make the trip for a visit that can’t happen.

Application Docs

  • If you are 16 or older, attach a copy of an approved photo ID to your visitor application.
  • If the visitor is under 16, attach a copy of the minor’s birth certificate to the visitor application.

Return your completed application to the prison facility where the person is housed. Staff must approve it before any visit can happen. Don't book travel until you have confirmation - this is one of the most common reasons visitors get turned away.

Expect screening at the entrance. If you're 16 or older, you'll go through a pat/frisk search and an electronic device scan before entering. Refuse any part of the search, and you won't get in.

Contraband warning: Cell phones are considered contraband and are prohibited from all prison facilities.

Dress for a strict entry process. At minimum, you'll need shirts and shoes. You'll also pass through a metal detector - clear it, or you won't be allowed in.

Under normal circumstances, the person you're visiting can have one visiting session per week. Each visit maxes out at two hours, so plan your travel and arrival time around that window.

Each session allows up to three approved visitors. The warden can adjust that number based on space and operational needs, so if you're coming as a larger group, plan for a smaller rotation.
