The Two Bibb County Facilities: Corrections Center vs. Detention Center (addresses, roles, and programs)

The Corrections Unit is Bibb County's main jail. It currently houses over 900 inmates - capacity expanded from 585 back in 2007 to meet growing demand. Over 140 employees staff the operation.

The Corrections Unit focuses on day-to-day custody and care. Its mission: maintain a safe, secure environment for pretrial detainees while providing basics like food, clothing, shelter, and access to medical and mental health services.

The Detention Center serves a different function entirely. It operates as a Work Release and Community Service Center, with roughly 192 beds split between the two programs.

Work release lets detainees keep their private-sector jobs while serving their sentence. They can use that income to pay court-ordered fines and restitution - and continue supporting their families.

Detainees in the community service program complete court-ordered hours doing work that benefits the area. According to the Sheriff's Office, this saves the city of Macon and Bibb County over $500,000 a year - tasks that would otherwise go to private contractors.

  • If your loved one is at the Corrections Unit (main jail), services there include visitations, along with things like library calls, religious services, outside recreation, GED possessions, and transport for court and medical appointments.
  • If your loved one is at the Detention Center, that facility is specifically set up for work release and community service placements, so the day-to-day procedures you’ll deal with may not match what you’d expect at the main jail.
  1. Confirm where the person is housed - ask whether they are at the Corrections Center or the Detention Center (work release/community service).
  2. Ask about current visitation rules for that specific facility - procedures can differ depending on where someone is housed.
  3. Check work release eligibility and requirements - since the Detention Center is a work release facility, confirm what’s needed for placement.
  4. Ask how transfers are handled between the two facilities - find out what triggers a move and how families are notified.
  5. Verify any time-sensitive steps you need to take - especially if you’re trying to coordinate work release/community service questions with the Detention Center.
