Sending Money and Buying Commissary for Someone at Moore Unit: Who Can Deposit, How, and eCommDirect Rules
Sending money or ordering commissary for someone at Moore Unit is straightforward once you know the two big rules: you must be an approved sender, and you must use the accepted deposit methods or eCommDirect. Here's how to get set up, avoid returned deposits, and understand limits, fees, and timing.
At Moore Unit (TDCJ), only certain people can send money. Since September 1, 2020, you must be on the inmate's Approved Visitor List or Inmate Telephone List (Approved Phone List) to deposit funds into their trust account. If you're not on one of these lists, your deposit will be rejected, even if everything else is correct. Confirm your approval status before sending anything, then use one of the accepted deposit methods below.
To get on the Approved Phone List, register your telephone number at texasprisonphone.com. Have the inmate's TDCJ ID number ready since you'll need it to complete registration.
Accepted Methods
- ✓ Mail a money order or cashier’s check with a completed deposit slip.
- ✓ Set up a monthly checking account debit (ACH) by submitting an ACH authorization form with a voided check (this automatically deposits a set amount each month).
Warning: Cash and personal checks are not accepted for inmate trust fund deposits. If you send them, they will be returned to you.
To mail a deposit, you'll need a deposit slip. The inmate can send you one, or you can request one by mailing a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Inmate Trust Fund, PO Box 60, Huntsville, TX 77342-0060. Once you have the slip, mail your money order or cashier's check with the completed deposit slip to that same address.
Note: Deposits of $500.00 or more, along with certain checks (insurance, company, payroll, estate, and similar disbursements), are held for 14 days before the inmate can access the funds.
- Choose your monthly amount - ACH is set up to automatically deposit a set amount from a personal checking account once each month.
- Complete the ACH authorization form - fill it out with the inmate information and the checking account details you want debited.
- Attach a voided check - the voided check must be from the account that will be debited.
- Mail the form and voided check to the Inmate Trust Fund - send it to: Inmate Trust Fund, PO Box 629, Huntsville, Texas 77342-0629.
- Plan around the processing timeline - the debit happens on or around the 5th of the month, and the credit to the offender’s account happens on or around the 10th.
eCommDirect sets quarterly spending limits for commissary purchases. As of July 1, 2022, the limit is $70 per quarter for January through March, April through June, and July through September. The October through December quarter has a higher limit of $95 for holiday spending. New arrivals should note: if someone was recently received, they can't make eCommDirect purchases until the next calendar quarter begins.
eCommDirect limits order frequency too. Only one purchase per inmate can go through each day. If an order fails, you'll need to wait and try again the next day.
- ✓ Purchase fee: $3.75 to make a purchase.
- ✓ Deposit fee: $2.50 plus 2.25% of the deposit amount.
- ✓ Deposit + purchase together: $3.75 plus 2.25% of the deposit amount (a combined transaction fee).
After placing an eCommDirect merchandise order, expect delivery within five business days of TDCJ receiving the transaction details. Security issues or staffing problems at the unit can cause delays, so that five-day window isn't guaranteed.
Note: eCommDirect is the only acceptable online package program for TDCJ inmates. Other online package programs are not accepted.
If eCommDirect won't let you place an order, check your approval status first. The inmate must add you to their Approved Visitation List, or you need to register your phone for the Approved Phone List. Once you're on one of those lists, you can make eCommDirect purchases for them.
