Why Visitor Applications Expire — How to Renew Your VADOC Visitor Approval on Time

If you're approved to visit someone in a Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) facility, that approval doesn't last forever. Here's what the expiration rule means, when to renew, and how to submit your renewal without losing visiting time.

VADOC visitor applications expire three years after the approval date. The clock starts when you were approved, not when you last visited. Think of your approval date as your "renew by" deadline, and plan ahead so your visiting privileges continue without a gap.

When to Start Renewing

  • If you live in Virginia, submit a new, updated online visitor application at least 45 days before your approval expires so your visitation privileges continue without interruption.
  • If you live out of state, submit a new, updated online visitor application at least 90 days before your approval expires so your visitation privileges continue without interruption. Starting earlier also gives you more breathing room to plan travel and avoid last-minute surprises if processing takes time.

Block out about 20 to 30 minutes to complete the VADOC online visitation application. That's manageable if you plan for it, but it's not something you want to squeeze in between errands.

Note: The VADOC online visitation application does not let you save a draft. Gather everything you need beforehand and plan to finish the form in one sitting.

  1. Pick a time you can finish: Plan for about 20 to 30 minutes so you are not rushed partway through.
  2. Get your information together first: Since you cannot save a draft, it helps to have your details ready before you open the form.
  3. Complete and submit the application in one sitting: Work straight through and submit once you are done, because you cannot pause and return later to finish.

If your approval has already expired, submit a new visitor application as soon as possible. Had a visit coming up? Contact the facility before you travel so you know whether you'll be allowed in. The safest move going forward: renew well before the three-year mark so you're not stuck missing visits while you wait for reapproval.
