What Counts as 'Immediate Family' for Visits at Bledsoe (and Why It Matters)

This definition matters because it affects how soon you can visit after someone is newly committed. Under TDOC policy, immediate family members of newly committed inmates may be allowed in before their visitation application is officially approved. The Warden can temporarily add immediate family to the approved visitor list, letting visits happen while the paperwork processes.

That early access has limits. The temporary approval lasts no more than 60 days from the inmate's intake date, and it doesn't replace the normal approval process. Outside of this immediate-family exception for newly committed inmates, no visitor gets in until their application is approved. Applications should be approved or denied within 30 days of receipt - so you won't wait forever - but you still need the form on file.

1. Get the CR-2152 application form - Blank visitation applications (CR-2152) are furnished to inmates, along with instructions for prospective visitors.
2. Complete it and send it back with a current photo - Prospective visitors are instructed to return the form with a current photograph within 30 days, and the application won’t be processed without a recent photo attached.
3. Track the decision window and plan for renewals - Applications should be approved or denied within 30 days of receipt, and visitation applications must be updated every two years (24 months).
4. Handle minors correctly (under 18) - A custodial parent or legal guardian must complete and notarize the Parental Consent/Release for Minor’s Visitation form (CR-2152, page 2) and designate the authorized escort/guardian; the child may visit only with the authorized person named on that notarized form.
