How Brazoria County Jail's New Mail System Works (and Why Your Letters Go to Longview First)

Mailing a letter or photo to someone at Brazoria County Jail? It won't go straight to the facility anymore. Since January 9, 2023, most inmate mail gets routed through Longview first, where it's scanned and delivered electronically.

How Brazoria County Jail's New Mail System Works (and Why Your Letters Go to Longview First)

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office launched this new mail system on January 9, 2023. The reason? Security. Routing mail through a processing center helps reduce contraband entering the jail.

Under the new rules, all inmate mail - except legal and medical correspondence - goes to a processing address in Longview. That's why you'll address your envelope to PO Box 591 in Longview rather than sending it directly to the jail.

Note: Brazoria County Detention Center doesn't accept packages or product deliveries for inmates. Any packages sent will be searched and returned to the carrier.

Size Limits

  • Keep mail no larger than 8.5" wide x 11" tall.
  • Limit each envelope to no more than 5 pages.
  • Include no more than 1 photograph per envelope.

These limits apply per envelope. Sending multiple pages or photos? You'll need to split them up - each envelope can hold a maximum of five pages and only one photo.

Warning: Mail sent to PO Box 591, Longview, TX 75606 won't be returned. Once it's scanned and delivered electronically to the inmate, the original is destroyed.

Bottom line: don't send anything irreplaceable. If you're mailing an original photo or important document, make a copy first. You won't get it back.

Want to skip postal mail entirely? The county points to NCIC.com's Inmate Messaging system as a faster way to send messages, documents, and photos electronically.

Messages cost $0.25 each. Photos and document images run $0.35 per item.
