What happens when you arrive at Buena Vista: check-in, ID, UV hand stamp, and the consent-to-search form
Your first few minutes at Buena Vista are mostly paperwork and identity checks. Know what staff will ask for—your physical photo ID, a consent-to-search form, and (at some custody levels) a UV hand stamp—and you can walk in prepared instead of getting turned away at the door.
If you're 18 or older, you'll need a valid picture ID to get in. Staff check it to confirm your identity during check-in. Bring it on your person - not left in the car or tucked into a bag you won't be allowed to carry inside.
Bring the actual, current physical ID. Photocopies and digital images of an ID (including a photo on your phone) aren’t accepted for entry, even if the picture is clear.
You'll also need to complete AR Form 300-01B (Offender Visitor Consent to Search Authorization) before entering. This form spells out when and how visitors can be searched during the visit.
Good news: you won't fill this out every time. Once completed, AR Form 300-01B stays on file for one year. After that, you'll need to sign a new one.
At facilities housing medium- or higher-custody offenders, everyone except children under three gets the back of their right hand stamped with a UV marker before entry. Staff check the stamp under a black light when you leave to confirm your identity.
Security procedures apply to everyone on DOC grounds. You, your vehicle, and anything you bring can be inspected or searched for facility security purposes.
If you refuse a procedure: If you won’t submit to an entrance or visiting procedure (including a search), you’ll be denied entry and required to leave DOC property immediately.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Bring a valid, physical government photo ID if you’re 18+.
- ✓ Don’t rely on a photocopy or a picture of your ID on your phone - those aren’t accepted.
- ✓ Be ready to register by completing AR Form 300-01B before you enter.
- ✓ If the facility houses medium- or higher-custody offenders, expect a UV stamp on the back of your right hand (kids under 3 are exempt).
- ✓ Plan for inspections/searches of people, vehicles, and property on DOC grounds.
