What Happens If You Violate Visiting Rules? Colorado DOC Suspension Rules (applies to Buena Vista)

If a visit gets terminated for a rules violation, Colorado DOC can suspend your visiting privileges after an administrative review. How long depends on whether it's your first, second, or third offense. Serious violations can lead to a permanent ban.

Colorado DOC follows an escalating suspension timeline when a visit is terminated for a violation. After an administrative review, a first violation can result in a 30-day suspension. A second violation bumps that to 90 days. A third violation can mean a full year.

Some violations are serious enough to trigger a permanent suspension after administrative review. This includes any activity that appears intended to help an incarcerated person escape or attempt an escape. It also covers smuggling or attempting to pass contraband during a visit.

Warning: If DOC believes your actions were aimed at helping an escape or smuggling contraband, you can lose visiting privileges permanently after administrative review.

A visiting suspension doesn't just apply to one prison. If you're suspended or revoked from visiting at Buena Vista (or any other Colorado DOC facility), that suspension applies across all Colorado DOC facilities statewide.

  1. Get the reason and keep your paperwork - Ask facility administration what rule was cited and save any notices or documentation tied to the denial, termination, or suspension.
  2. Fix what you can and reapply - If the reason for denial is something you can remedy, resubmit the visiting application with the required documents.
  3. Request reconsideration in writing if the reason still applies - If the denial reason remains in effect, you can ask for reconsideration by writing to BVCC Warden Bryan Coleman, P.O. Box 2017, Buena Vista, CO 81211.

Note: Documentation matters. If you're requesting reconsideration, include any supporting documents you want reviewed. Send written reconsideration requests to BVCC Warden Bryan Coleman at P.O. Box 2017, Buena Vista, CO 81211.
