Before Your First Visit to Butler County Prison: A 1-Page Checklist

ID

  • Bring a photo ID - you must present it at entry (no exceptions).
  • Check in with the Lobby Officer when you arrive.
  • Be ready to tell staff which inmate you’re there to see.
  • Arrive early - if you’re more than 5 minutes late, you’ll be denied the visit.
  • Put all personal items into the provided lock boxes before entering.
  • Expect security screening - everyone must pass a metal detector and may be searched.
  • Don’t bring property, photos, clothing, or money to “hand over” during visitation unless it’s been approved ahead of time.
  • If you need to add money to an inmate account, use a money order by mail, an internet option, or the lobby kiosk (mail deposits must be money orders only - no cash or personal checks).

You'll need photo ID to get into Butler County Prison - no exceptions. Staff check at the door, so make sure it's in your pocket before you leave home.

Tip: Grab the photo ID you'd use for any official situation. Double-check you have it before walking into the lobby.

  1. Report to the Lobby Officer - check in as soon as you arrive.
  2. Show your photo ID - this is required to verify who you are.
  3. Tell staff which inmate you’re visiting - you’ll be asked who you’re here to see.
  4. Confirm you’re on the inmate’s visitation list - the inmate must place your name on their list (up to 5 adult visitors), and they can only change that list every 30 days.

Note: You must be on the inmate's visitation list to schedule a visit. Inmates can only update their list once every 30 days.

Travel light. You'll need to stash all personal items in the lock boxes provided at the entrance.

Expect to walk through a metal detector. Staff may also search you as part of the screening process.

Warning: Searches can go further - up to and including a strip search - if there is cause.

Show up more than five (5) minutes late and you'll be turned away - no exceptions. Build in extra time for parking, check-in, lock boxes, and security so you're not scrambling at the door.

Don't bring items to hand off during your visit. Staff won't accept property, photos, clothing, or money unless you've gotten prior approval from the Shift Commander, Warden, or Deputy Warden.

Need to drop off something essential? Get approval first. Legal materials, medications, eyeglasses, and medical devices may be accepted - but only case-by-case and only with prior sign-off from the Warden, Deputy Wardens, or Shift Commander.

  • Use a money order by mail, an internet option, or the kiosk in the prison lobby to deposit money to an inmate account.
  • If you mail funds, send a money order only - no cash and no personal checks.
