How to Get Your Name on an Inmate's Visitor List at Butler County Prison
Want to visit someone at Butler County Prison? Your name has to be on their official visitation list first. Here's how the list works, how often it can change, and what to do if you need to get added.
Each inmate at Butler County Prison submits a visitation list with up to five adult visitors. The list includes each person's name, address, and telephone number. If you're not on it, the prison won't schedule a visit for you. So step one is always making sure the inmate has added you.
"Adult" means anyone over 18. Bringing a minor? They don't need to be listed as long as they're with a parent or legal guardian - but they still count toward the prison's three-person limit per visit. Plan your group accordingly so you don't exceed the headcount.
Here's the catch: inmates can only change their visitation list once every 30 days. Adding you - or swapping someone out to make room - can't happen last minute. If you're hoping to visit soon, have the inmate submit the change as early as possible and plan around that 30-day window.
Note: Visitation lists are confidential at Butler County Prison. Staff won’t give out the names on an inmate’s list to anyone.
- Ask the inmate to add you to their five-adult list - Visits won’t be scheduled unless you’re on it, so this is the non-negotiable first move.
- Talk about timing before you make plans - The inmate can only change the visitation list every 30 days, so if they’ve recently updated it, you may need to wait until the next change is allowed.
- Plan for the possibility of a swap - Because the list is limited to five adult visitors, the inmate may need to remove someone else to add you.
- ✓ Make sure the inmate has your full legal name exactly as it appears on your photo ID
- ✓ Confirm the inmate has the correct address for you
- ✓ Confirm the inmate has the correct telephone number for you
- ✓ Don’t rely on the prison to confirm whether you’re listed (the list is confidential)
Note: Minors don’t need to be listed if they’re with a parent or legal guardian, but they still count toward the three-person limit for the visit.
Once you're on the list, the inmate handles scheduling. They'll reach out to agree on a time, then notify the Pod Correction Officer to lock in the slot. Waiting for confirmation? The ball is usually in the inmate's court - they need to coordinate through their pod.
- Report to the lobby officer - Start your check-in by presenting yourself at the lobby.
- Show photo identification - You’ll verify your identity with photo ID at the entrance.
- Tell staff who you’re visiting - Be ready to state which inmate you’re there to see so they can process the visit.
Some people aren't eligible to visit, even if the inmate wants them there. Butler County Prison doesn't allow visits from anyone who's been an inmate within the last six months. If that's you, you'll need to wait until that window passes.
The prison also restricts visitation for anyone with pending criminal charges, anyone on probation or parole, and co-defendants. Visits won't be allowed until those situations are resolved. If any of this applies to you, sort it out before making plans - otherwise you risk getting turned away at the door.
