Visiting With Kids at Butler County Prison: a practical checklist
Bringing kids to visit can feel overwhelming. This checklist covers the Butler County Prison rules that trip families up most often: who can accompany a minor, what documents you might need, and how children factor into visitor limits.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The only exception: prior approval from the Warden or Deputy Warden for the minor to visit without their parent or guardian present.
- ✓ Proof of guardianship (for the adult bringing the child)
- ✓ The child’s birth certificate
Here's some good news: children visiting with their parent or legal guardian don't need to be listed on the inmate's visitation list.
Kids do count toward the room headcount, though. Butler County Prison allows three visitors per inmate per visit - and that includes any minors in your group.
Note: Each inmate is allowed one visit per day, so plan ahead if multiple family members want to come on the same date.
Bring your photo ID. Butler County Prison requires photo identification upon entry, with no exceptions.
- Check in with the lobby officer - this is your first stop when you arrive.
- Show your photo ID - you’ll be asked to verify who you are.
- Tell staff who you’re visiting - be ready to state which inmate you’re there to see.
- Confirm you’re on the visitation list - your name must be on the inmate’s list to be allowed to visit.
Parent Prep Tips
- ✓ Coordinate the visit details with the incarcerated person ahead of time so you’re not guessing on the day you bring the kids.
- ✓ Arrive early so you have time to check in and handle document checks without rushing children through the process.
Note: Don’t bring items to “drop off” during visitation. Property, photos, clothing, and money won’t be accepted unless you already have approval from the Shift Commander, Warden, or Deputy Warden.
Do a quick headcount before loading everyone into the car. Remember: three visitors max per inmate per visit, and children count. Coordinate with other relatives too - inmates get one visit per day, so make sure everyone agrees on who's going.
- ✓ Your photo ID (required for entry)
- ✓ Proof of guardianship (if you’re the legal guardian)
- ✓ The child’s birth certificate (for verification)
- ✓ A plan for which adult is accompanying the minor (unless prior approval was granted by the Warden or Deputy Warden)
