Why Weekend Video Visiting Ended (July 2023) — And What You Can Do Instead for California City

If you relied on weekend video visits, you're not imagining the change. As of July 7, 2023, weekend video visiting ended at all adult institutions, including California City Correctional Facility (CAC). The tradeoff? CAC now offers in-person visiting three days a week - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Weekend options still exist, just face-to-face instead of through a screen.

The main replacement for weekend video visits is more in-person time. Since July 7, 2023, California City Correctional Facility has offered in-person visiting every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - giving you more flexibility to work around jobs, childcare, and travel. Video contact didn't vanish entirely; it just moved. If your loved one has a tablet, they get 15 minutes of free video calls every two weeks. That's not the same as a full weekend video schedule, but it's still a real face-to-face check-in between in-person visits.

Good to know: Audio calls - whether from wall phones or tablets - are always free. When video isn't an option, phone time can help bridge the gap.

  1. Plan for an in-person visit (Fri–Sun) - CAC’s in-person visiting is offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so start by picking the day that works best for you.
  2. Schedule through VSA - In-person visits at CAC are scheduled online through the Department’s Visitation Scheduling Application (VSA).
  3. Claim your VSA account if you’re new - If it’s your first time using VSA, you’ll need to claim your account before you can schedule a visit.

  • Pick an in-person visit day (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) and build your routine around that weekend window.
  • If your loved one has a tablet, coordinate around their 15 minutes of free video calling time every two weeks.
  • Use free audio calls (from wall phones or tablets) as your “default” way to stay in touch between visits and the limited video minutes.
