Virtual Visits with Inmates: How to Set Up, Schedule, and What to Expect
Virtual visits make staying connected easier—but they come with strict setup and timing rules. Here's how to get your account ready, schedule correctly, and avoid common issues that get visits denied or cut short.
You can request a virtual visit if you’re already on the inmate’s approved visitation list. The name on your account also has to match the name on that approved list - no nicknames. If your name doesn’t match exactly, you’re more likely to run into approval problems when you try to schedule or join the visit.
- Create your own visitor account - Go to scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app and set up an account in your own name.
- Have each person register separately - Even if you plan to sit together for the same visit, every person who wants to participate must have their own account.
Plan ahead. Virtual visits must be scheduled at least three days in advance, and no more than seven days out. If you're trying to set something up last-minute and can't find an available slot, that scheduling window is usually why.
- ✓ Try to modify your visit no later than two days before the scheduled time.
- ✓ Cancel your visit no later than one day before the scheduled time.
- ✓ Be in place in front of your device 15 minutes before the visit starts.
A virtual visit costs a flat $10 for up to 50 minutes. You're charged when the visit begins. If it ends early for any reason, there's no partial refund - you still pay the full $10.
Only approved visitors can join, with a maximum of four people at one time. Kids can participate, but they must be approved and accompanied by an approved adult. Minors count toward the four-person limit - so two adults and two children already maxes it out.
- ✓ Visitors age 10 and older: be ready to show a photo ID if the visitation coordinator asks.
- ✓ Children under 10: have a certified long-form birth certificate available as identification.
Warning: Don't join from a bedroom, bathroom, nightclub, or similar location. These are prohibited and can get your visit denied.
