Adults 18 and older need a valid government-issued ID. Starting June 1, 2025, if you have a valid South Carolina driver's license, you can register for visitation online - faster and easier. Using a passport, U.S. visa, or out-of-state driver's license? You'll need to go through the paper visitation application instead.

  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license (18+) if you want to register for visitation online
  • Passport or U.S. visa (18+) if you don’t have a South Carolina driver’s license
  • Out-of-state driver’s license (18+) if you’re not licensed in South Carolina (paper application process)
  • Paper visitation application if you’re not eligible to register online

Kids age 10 and older need a government-issued photo ID to visit. Bring something official with a photo - school IDs won't work - so check-in goes smoothly.

Children nine and younger need a certified long-form birth certificate. It has to be the certified long-form version - short forms and unofficial printouts won't be accepted. Staff use this document to confirm the child's identity.

  1. Request a certified long-form birth certificate - Get it through the vital records office for the state where the child was born.
  2. Check that it’s the certified long-form version - Bring the certified copy the state issues, not a short form.
  3. Keep it protected for travel day - Store it flat in an envelope or folder so it stays clean and readable.

Virtual visits work differently, but the ID requirements follow the same age cutoffs. Anyone on an inmate's approved visitation list can request a virtual visit - you'll need to create an account at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Be ready to show ID when asked. Visitors age 10 and older will need a photo ID. For children younger than 10, have their certified long-form birth certificate ready.

  • Confirm you’re on the inmate’s approved visitation list before you try to request a virtual visit
  • Create your virtual visitation account at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app
  • Have a government-issued photo ID ready for each approved visitor age 10+
  • Have a certified long-form birth certificate ready for each approved child under 10
  • If you’re unsure what the coordinator will need to verify for your visit, ask before your scheduled time

Note: You must be on the inmate's approved visitation list and have an account at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app to request a virtual visit.
