How to Send Mail to an Inmate at Canyon County Jail (2024 scanned-mail rules)
Canyon County Jail changed how inmate mail works in 2024. Your letter's address, paper size, and format all matter more now, and getting any of them wrong means your mail gets rejected.
Starting January 29, 2024, Canyon County Jail scans all inmate mail. Your letter never reaches the inmate as a physical piece of paper. It gets scanned and delivered to them electronically. This means you need to send mail to one of the jail's two approved addresses (more on those below). Any mail sent to other addresses after March 29, 2024 will be rejected. One more thing to know: once your letter has been scanned and delivered, the physical original is destroyed.
Addressing
- ✓ Inmate’s full name (first and last)
- ✓ Inmate ID number
- ✓ Your full return address on the envelope
The jail uses two mailing addresses: one for standard mail from friends and family, and one for legal correspondence from attorneys. Make sure you include the inmate's full name and inmate ID on the envelope. For standard (non-legal) mail from friends and family, address it as: [Inmate Full Name - Inmate ID] Canyon County Jail, ID PO Box 76550 Highland Heights, KY 41076 For legal mail from attorneys or other legal representation, address it as: [Inmate Full Name - Inmate ID] Canyon County Jail 219 N. 12th Ave. Caldwell, ID 83605 All mail must go to one of these two addresses. Anything sent elsewhere after March 29, 2024 will be rejected.
Your pages need to work with the jail's scanner. That means no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches (standard letter size), no thicker than light card stock, and flat enough to feed through a sheet-fed scanner.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Stamps
- ✓ Blank envelopes
- ✓ Stationery
- ✓ Cash
- ✓ Checks
- ✓ Any other forms of currency
All incoming mail is opened, inspected, and may be read by staff checking for contraband or rule violations. If anything violates jail rules, the mail will be destroyed. It won't be returned to you. Even when your mail follows the rules and gets accepted, remember: after scanning and electronic delivery, the physical letter is destroyed.
If your loved one has less than $2.50 on their account, the jail considers them indigent and they can request a free writing pack. It includes two stamped envelopes, a flex pen, and four sheets of paper.
