Getting Your Property Back from Carson City Sheriff's Office
Need to pick up property or evidence from the Carson City Sheriff's Office? You'll deal with the Property and Evidence unit at 911 E. Musser St., Carson City, NV 89701. Call them at (775) 283-7862 or email Evidence@carsoncity.gov.
Appointment required: Property releases are handled by appointment only, so schedule first before you go in person.
If your item was booked into Evidence as part of a criminal case, you'll need a Release of Evidence from the Carson City District Attorney before the Evidence unit can hand it over. Without that release, the Sheriff's Office can't give it back - even if it's yours.
Once a case closes and any required releases come through, you have 90 days to pick up your property.
Don’t wait too long: Unclaimed items - including property belonging to incarcerated people who haven’t contacted the Evidence Section - will be auctioned or disposed of.
Third Party Pickup
- ✓ Make an appointment - releases are handled by appointment only.
- ✓ Bring a notarized authorization letter from the owner - someone else can pick up your property only if the office receives a notarized letter authorizing that pickup.
Claiming a firearm? Expect extra steps. You'll need to pass a background check before the Evidence unit can release it.
You may also need a receipt or bill of sale proving the firearm is yours. If you have purchase or transfer paperwork, bring it to your appointment.
Live out of the area? Mailing might be an option. You'll likely need to cover shipping costs. Call the Evidence unit to find out what's possible - and remember, you still need an appointment to arrange anything.
