Shirts-and-tops

  • No halter tops
  • No backless shirts
  • No sleeveless shirts
  • No strapless garments
  • Shirts must have sleeves and cover your shoulders
  • Tops can’t show cleavage
  • Your midriff must be covered (no exposed stomach)
  • No sheer or see-through clothing
  • Undergarments (bras, underwear, boxer shorts, etc.) must not be visible

Note: Expect screening at the entrance - visitors must pass a security screening and may be physically searched. You’ll also typically need a valid photo ID, and the on-duty supervisor can make the final call on whether a visit is authorized.

For shorts, skirts, and dresses, follow Carson City Jail’s fingertip-length rule: with your arms relaxed at your sides, the hem needs to extend below your fingertips. If it rides up when you walk or sit, swap it out before you go.

Wear pants at your waist with a normal fit. Carson City Jail won't allow anything excessively baggy or excessively tight - just aim for something that stays in place and looks neat.

Other-features-and-tips

  • No ripped or torn shirts
  • No ripped or torn pants
  • Bring a simple cover-up (like a sweater) if your top might not fully cover your shoulders

Tip: You may be screened and searched before your visit, so dress conservatively and comfortably to keep check-in as smooth as possible.

  1. Call the jail information line - If you’re unsure whether an outfit will pass, or you were denied at the door, call (775) 283-JAIL (5245).
  2. Ask for clarification and be ready to change - The on-duty supervisor may authorize a visit with or without ID, so final decisions can come down to supervisor discretion.
