What to Expect During Extended Family Visits at Cedar Creek
Extended Family Visits (EFVs) take planning, and the timeline can feel slow while you wait for answers. Here's what to expect at Cedar Creek—from application processing to the orientation and paperwork that happen before a visit gets on the calendar.
EFV applications can take more than 12 weeks to process. Think in months, not days, when you're trying to coordinate work schedules, childcare, and travel.
You can only submit an EFV application once per year. If something's missing or you change your mind, you won't get another shot right away - so take your time and make sure the packet is complete and accurate before submitting.
Turning in paperwork doesn't guarantee approval. At Cedar Creek, all EFV participants need approval from the Superintendent or their designee. The final decision happens at the facility level as part of the review process.
Note: If the incarcerated person has a serious violent or sex offense, the request goes through additional review - an EFV Review Committee must review it and make a recommendation to the Deputy Assistant Secretary.
Medical Paperwork
- ✓ Submit a completed Visitor Medication Questionnaire (DOC 14-213) to facility EFV staff at least two weeks before the scheduled EFV.
Before your first EFV, Cedar Creek schedules an orientation. If you're nervous about walking into something unfamiliar, this is where the facility walks you through how EFVs work - before your actual visit happens.
- Start with your incarcerated family member - Cedar Creek EFV scheduling is handled by the facility, and families are told to contact the incarcerated person to initiate the scheduling process.
- Have them initiate scheduling through the facility - once you’ve reached them, they can follow the facility’s process to get the EFV request moving on the inside.
- Wait for Cedar Creek to set the schedule - because each facility handles EFV scheduling, the actual dates and timing come through Cedar Creek’s local scheduling process.
