Visiting CNMCF with Young Children and Infants: What Families Need to Know

Visiting Central New Mexico Correctional Facility (CNMCF) with kids is doable, but a few rules can trip families up on arrival. This guide covers group size limits, required paperwork, and infant policies so you know what to expect before you go.

No one under 18 can enter CNMCF unless they have proper ID and are accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or adult relative. The only exception: if the minor can show documented proof of legal marriage to the inmate. Bringing a child? Make sure you have their identification ready and the right adult with you at the door.

Reminder: A minor cannot enter unless they are properly identified and with a responsible adult relative, parent, or legal guardian (or they present documented proof of legal marriage to the inmate).

Bringing an infant? CNMCF requires a diaper change before the visit begins. A correctional officer of the same sex as the parent or guardian doing the change must be present. Build extra time into your arrival for this step, especially if you're checking in multiple children.

  1. Arrive with time to spare - You will need time to complete the required pre-visit diaper change.
  2. Ask staff for the right officer - The diaper change must be observed by a correctional officer of the same sex as the parent or guardian changing the diaper.
  3. Complete the diaper change before the visit - Do the change first, then proceed into the visit as directed by staff.

CNMCF limits how many people can visit an inmate at one time, and the cap depends on visitor ages and available space. For visitors age six and older, the limit is three people at once (space permitting). Younger children have a separate limit: up to three kids age five and under at one time, also space permitting. If your group includes a mix of adults, teens, and little ones, count heads before you go so you don't have to rearrange plans at check-in.

  • βœ“ Count visitors age 6 and older. An inmate may be limited to 3 at one time (if space permits).
  • βœ“ Count children age 5 and younger. An inmate may be limited to up to 3 at one time (if space permits).
  • βœ“ Plan for space limits. Even if your counts fit the rules, space availability can still control entry.

Supervision matters when visiting with kids, and you need to plan for it before you arrive. CNMCF may limit an inmate to three visitors age six and older at one time if space permits, plus up to three children age five and younger. These limits matter most when you're juggling multiple children. Keep your group within the allowed size and bring only the kids you can actively supervise in a structured environment where space may be tight.

Note: Available space can affect how many visitors are allowed in at once. If your group exceeds the limits, you may need to decide who enters for that visit.
