How to mail a letter to someone at Central Prison (TextBehind scanning process explained)
Mail for someone at Central Prison doesn't go straight to the mailroom. Regular (non-legal) letters are routed through TextBehind, screened and scanned, then delivered electronically to the person's tablet.
For regular (non-legal) letters, address your envelope to TextBehind using this exact format: Offender Name and OPUS Number Central Prison P.O. Box 247 Phoenix, MD 21131 Write out the full prison name - no abbreviations. The OPUS number goes on the first line with the person's name. Small mistakes here can cause big delays, so double-check before you mail it.
Warning: If your envelope isn’t addressed in the exact TextBehind format, it will be returned to you.
Your return address matters, too. TextBehind requires your full first name and full last name on the return address - no initials. If the return address doesn’t meet that standard, the mail will be sent back to you.
After TextBehind receives your non-legal mail, they screen it and scan the contents (letters, cards, photos, artwork, and similar items). Instead of handing over the original paper, TextBehind forwards scanned images electronically, and the person at Central Prison receives it on their tablet.
Want the original paper letter back? You have 30 days to request a return. Contact TextBehind customer support at info@textbehind.com to have the originals mailed back to you.
TextBehind charges a $2.50 service fee per letter to cover the cost of mailing originals back when you request a return.
Religious correspondence courses and materials work differently. Approved religious courses, sacred texts, and Bible study materials must come directly from the vendor, school, or religious institution - not through TextBehind.
- Have the offender submit a Request for Assistance Form - they’ll send the facility form to chaplaincy staff (the chaplain, religious coordinator, or designated staff) to request approval for the religious correspondence course.
Ordering a package or vendor shipment? Skip TextBehind - they'll return it to the sender. Use the prison's street address instead: John Doe #1234567 Central Prison 1300 Western Blvd. Raleigh, NC 27606
Remember: TextBehind is for scanned non-legal letters and similar mail. Vendor shipments and approved religious course materials must be shipped directly to Central Prison, not routed through TextBehind.
